The P-3P (the fourth model of the LOCKHEED ORION) is made of a P3B cell equipped with modern sensors, computers and other tactical equipment. This aircraft is designed for maritime surveillance (detects, localizes, tracks and attacks submarines and surface vessels), as well as for Search and Rescue missions (by launching survival equipment) and for mining operations. The Portuguese Air Force kept, starting in July 1992 and for a period of three and a half years, a P-3P stationed at Sigonella Air Base, Italy, on a permanent basis, to participate in the embargo declared by the Security Council of UNO to ex-Yugoslavia. The P-3P integrated the NATO Forces in the “Rapid Reaction Force”.
