ETAP-C: SOGAS Drop Mission

As part of the European Tactical Airlift Programme – Course (ETAP-C), currently taking place at Air Base No. 11 in Beja, a mission involving the deployment of High-Altitude Operational Jumpers (SOGAS) was carried out.

This type of jump makes it more difficult for air defense systems to detect and identify both the drop and the parachute infiltration. SOGAS are a special subgroup of military paratroopers trained to perform jumps from altitudes ranging between 12,000 and 35,000 feet (3,600 m to 10,600 m).

This operation offers significant advantages for inserting personnel or equipment into areas where low-altitude jumps would not be feasible due to tactical, geographical, or other restrictions.

Within the context and scenarios provided by the exercise, this kind of training allows for the operationalization and improvement of potential missions requiring the use of paratroopers — from deployment and drop procedures to ground actions.

Interoperability among participants remains one of the key features of this course, as well as one of its main benefits, providing a unique opportunity for the exchange of knowledge. All of this serves the overarching goal of delivering a comprehensive airlift tactics course aimed at enhancing tactical expertise and expanding operational capability in complex scenarios.
