Air Force rescues 50-year-old man in medical emergency

Yesterday, the Air Force rescued a 50-year-old crew member who was aboard the ship ‘CHRYSALIS’, sailing 172 kilometres from Montijo.

The man was showing symptoms that indicated the need for immediate medical assistance, which led the Navy's Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre to activate the Air Force Search and Rescue Centre.

In response to the request for assistance, Squadron 751 - ‘Pumas’, based at Air Base No. 6 in Montijo, was activated.

Using the EH-101 Merlin helicopter, the rescue took place within the usual parameters for this type of operation. This type of mission always requires close coordination between the pilot, winch operator and rescue worker, so that everything is done safely and as quickly as possible.

Once inside the helicopter, the rescued person was stabilised on board by the Aeronautical Nurse and transported to Transit Aerodrome No. 1 in Portela, where an INEM medical team was waiting to continue the healthcare necessary for their condition.

With this mission, the Air Force reaffirms its permanent availability to support those in need, maintaining its commitment to protect and serve, on land and at sea, ‘So That Others May Live’.
